Many employers have created policies in an attempt to prevent any perceived conflict of interest. For example, one healthcare organization states in its code of conduct that employees “will never accept gifts of money or cash equivalent, including gift cards from patients or their families.” The National Council of State Boards of Nursing states that “accepting inappropriate gifts (beyond a thank-you card or a gift of food to the unit, etc) is a warning sign in crossing professional boundaries.”
How about some thing for the ward? Craft items or washable toys for the play room. A mug set for the parents room? My daughter was admitted to a hospital in Manchester for an emergency operation to save her leg. The staff told me that a lot of the kids came with no clothes or toiletries so me and my friends clubbed together and donated 2 bin bags of various clothes, a ps2 and games and tooth brushes, tooth paste etc. Sometimes it's the basic things that mean the most xx ">

Every nurse remembers the excitement and pride he or she felt when first opening that box containing his or her very first stethoscope. The novelty may have worn-off some for your new graduate nurse, but that doesn’t mean that the poor stethoscope need be relegated to floating around at the bottom of a tote bag, getting tangled in everything from your gym socks to your lunch. This lightweight hard case will keep it in pristine condition for years to come!

Social retirement gifts. For some people, retirement can be isolating and lonely. Consider including a social invitation with your gift, such as an offer to get coffee, see a movie or attend a sporting event. "Rather than buy them a material gift, give them the gift of time – specifically, your time," says Michael Norton, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and co-author of "Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending." "Retirement involves completely changing your daily routine, which included conversations with co-workers all day, every day. Commit yourself to spending regular time with someone who is retiring, and you'll help them adjust to their new life." ">

The best retirement gift will depend on the recipient's interests and personality as well as your relationship. You might look for a keepsake or ornament, or a book that offers personal, legal or financial guidance on navigating the next stage of their life. Another approach is to buy them something they can use for a hobby or interest they'll now have more time for, such as golf. Movies also make great retirement gifts.
The symbolic white coat is no longer reserved for physicians! Though historically lab coats have only been worn by physicians, today more and more nurses are embracing high-quality medical lab coats to complete their professional look. With custom name and title embroidery, they can show off their nursing credentials and wear their white coat with pride. Opt for a lab coat made with performance fabrics, which will repel fluids, wick away sweat, and are generally lower-maintenance and have greater durability.
If you know the person you're buying a gift for likes to go to the theater or to other performances, buying tickets to a special event is always a nice idea. It gives the recipient something to look forward to during their newly acquired free time. Many people like to purchase these gifts if they're into giving experiences rather than regular presents. ">
Hobby retirement gifts. If you know what the retiree plans to do after leaving the workforce, you can tailor your gift to the retiree's hobbies or travel plans. "Subscriptions to publications, or to wine or gourmet food clubs, organization memberships, cultural events, lessons or activities in which the retiree has expressed interest, i.e. becoming more tech-savvy, learning a new language, painting, sculpting – even skydiving or rock climbing," says Rosanne Thomas, president of Protocol Advisors. "The person is retiring from work, not from life. Treat him or her to an exciting new experience."
Group retirement gifts. The most economical way to give a gift is as a group. Consider taking up a collection at the office in order to give a significant gift without busting your budget. "There is a benefit by going in as a group," says Cassie Mogilner Holmes, an associate professor of marketing at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. "Some experiences are quite costly, and a really great extraordinary experience is sort of better than the single bottle of wine you could buy by yourself." Remember to include a card or item that everyone in the office signs.

It’s an honor to be a preceptor. I love taking a new nurse, or a student nurse, under my wing and teaching them the ropes of nursing. And while I find great joy in teaching, I also find it incredibly stressful. Not that the new nurse isn’t smart, they are. It’s just a stressful job, and it’s very fast-paced, which means that it’s easy to fall behind and it’s easy to miss something. I have a routine, one I know that works well for me and my patients and keeps me in check throughout the day. If I have to hand over some of the responsibility to a newbie, or slow my pace down to explain something, it’s much easier to overlook something important, or fall behind and have to stay at work charting until 9pm. Not to mention, it’s my license that is on the line. ">
If you’re someone that has been interested in buying your favorite nurse a stethoscope, but don’t know which one they’d like this stethoscope makes for a very thoughtful gift that any nurse is sure to appreciate whether they’re a graduate nursing student, just starting out in their career or are simply in need of a new stethoscope, but haven’t had a chance to get one. The amount of money you spend a nurse’s gift has nothing to do with its value or the meaning it will have on the nurse. For example, if you had a family member in the hospital and wanted to do something nice for the nurses on the shift, picking up a box of donuts and bringing them to the nurse’s station to do wonders for the mood of the unit. Or you can do something a little more expensive and buy a unique pack of pens and give every nurse that provided care one. If you want to spend a little more, you could order some custom badge reels, stethoscope charms, maybe just a few Starbucks gift cards.
If you know they have a birthday, graduation, retirement, holiday or you share a professional relationship (in this case a traditional/common gift may be appropriate) such as a teacher/nursing instrucor or a labor/delivery nurse and you want to give them a good gift plan early and save yourself both the time and stress that comes with last minute shopping/gift giving. Long shifts, insane hours and more than difficult situations help describe the typical day for nurses in just about every department of any hospital or health care facility. National Nurses Week gives administrators a chance to let these dedicated professionals know that their heartfelt care for patients has not gone unnoticed. Honor nursing staff members at departmental parties with our all new theme decorated Nurses Week gift ideas or giveaways printed with your own sentiment and logo. ">
Some people may think gift cards are a “lazy option”, but I think they’re just fabulous. Does your preceptor enjoy reading? What about a magazine subscription? Or better yet…a nursing magazine subscription! Nurses need to stay up-to-date with healthcare trends, and the magazines that are out there now are really enjoyable to read as well as informative. Or, you could get him/her a gift card to the local scrub shop (we always need new scrubs…those things take a beating!). ">

When I was in my first year of practice as an oncology clinical nurse specialist (more than 30 years ago), my patient Lin offered me a personal gift. Sure, I had been the recipient of many gifts— flowers, chocolate candies, homemade food—but all had been shared with the entire staff. This situation was different: She was presenting me with a small, hand-embroidered hankie. No note, no verbal thank-you—just a smile and a bow. I had first met Lin about 10 months before, when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She had worked long, hard hours as a housekeeper; had a devoted husband and 2 beautiful boys, both in elementary school; and barely spoke English. I was the nurse who helped her understand her diagnosis, her access device, and her complex 2-year chemotherapy protocol, with all its adverse effects. She had just finished her initial phase of intense treatment and was transitioning to maintenance therapy. ">

Nurses play an important part in many people’s lives. And that goes for family and friends, as well as for patients. The work that a nurse does is admirable, and they can always be relied on for compassion and respect. When it comes time for a nurse to retire there will be a lot of people queuing up to wish them all the best. Co-workers, current and former patients, as well as friends and family, will all want to mark the event in a special way.

The amount of money you spend a nurse’s gift has nothing to do with its value or the meaning it will have on the nurse. Nurses Week usually includes a gift for nursing staff members. Depending on what the celebration budget allows for, gifts for nurses can include small surprises each day of Nurses' Week such as custom printed pens, key chains or badge holders. Organizers can choose to select a more impressive gift such as a lunch bag, tote or travel mug that will carry a message of recognition and creative logo as a reminder to the nurse each day they use the item.
