Do you have a favorite nurse that will soon be retiring? Is there a family member that will soon be ending her nursing career? Do you have a favorite co-worker who will be retiring in the very near future? After a lengthy career, this person will be looking forward to retirement, and you want to give her a gift that has meaning and value. And you most definitely don’t want it to be the kind of gift that spends its life sat at the back of a drawer.

Personalized retirement gifts. A mundane retirement gift can become special if you take the time to personalize it. Best-selling retirement gifts at Zazzle.com include T-shirts, mugs, hats, Christmas ornaments, wall clocks and golf balls that can be customized with the retiree's name, retirement date, occupation or a quote, according to Zazzle spokesperson Nicole Sargent.
Hobby retirement gifts. If you know what the retiree plans to do after leaving the workforce, you can tailor your gift to the retiree's hobbies or travel plans. "Subscriptions to publications, or to wine or gourmet food clubs, organization memberships, cultural events, lessons or activities in which the retiree has expressed interest, i.e. becoming more tech-savvy, learning a new language, painting, sculpting – even skydiving or rock climbing," says Rosanne Thomas, president of Protocol Advisors. "The person is retiring from work, not from life. Treat him or her to an exciting new experience."

How about some thing for the ward? Craft items or washable toys for the play room. A mug set for the parents room? My daughter was admitted to a hospital in Manchester for an emergency operation to save her leg. The staff told me that a lot of the kids came with no clothes or toiletries so me and my friends clubbed together and donated 2 bin bags of various clothes, a ps2 and games and tooth brushes, tooth paste etc. Sometimes it's the basic things that mean the most xx

A heartfelt note. Long after the chocolate has been eaten or the experience has been enjoyed, a retiree might stumble upon the thoughtful card included with the gift. "Present the gift in person with a heartfelt written and verbalized message of thanks for the retiree's dedication, hard work and accomplishments," Thomas says. "It is appreciation and acknowledgment that people want most of all." ">

Last year I had a preceptor for a new job that I took, and I didn’t know what thank you gift to get her. So I just started observing more intentionally what she liked to chat about, and what activities she enjoyed outside of work. My thank you gift at the end of our time together was a bag of gourmet hot cocoa and a big pack of diet coke along with a thank you note. She was so touched and to this day still raves about how much she loved that hot chocolate. ">

While habitual pen-losers may be filled with anxiety by receiving the gift of a pen as beautiful as any piece of jewelry, the rest of us won’t be able to wait to get our hands on it. ">
Nursing scrubs that get softer with every wash? I dare you to find a nurse who doesn't dream of that. Scrubs are a wardrobe staple for nurses—they can never have too many! But these nursing scrubs are unparalleled in their comfort (crucial for 18 hour shifts), durability (can last over 100 washes without fraying or fading), and fit (purposeful tailoring is flattering and gives unrestricted movement). Add an extra special touch with personalized embroidery in fade-resistant thread!

Microwave and dishwasher safe for your convenience. All designs are lead free. ">

Long shifts, insane hours and more than difficult situations help describe the typical day for nurses in just about every department of any hospital or health care facility. National Nurses Week gives administrators a chance to let these dedicated professionals know that their heartfelt care for patients has not gone unnoticed. Honor nursing staff members at departmental parties with our all new theme decorated Nurses Week gift ideas or giveaways printed with your own sentiment and logo.

Many employers have created policies in an attempt to prevent any perceived conflict of interest. For example, one healthcare organization states in its code of conduct that employees “will never accept gifts of money or cash equivalent, including gift cards from patients or their families.” The National Council of State Boards of Nursing states that “accepting inappropriate gifts (beyond a thank-you card or a gift of food to the unit, etc) is a warning sign in crossing professional boundaries.”
Stethoscopes grow legs and walk away nearly every shift. Perhaps a doctor grabs it for an exam, or he leaves it in a patient’s room and it’s never seen again! If you want to splurge for a new one, the Littmann brand is generally renowned, but other ways to keep it from disappearing are with cute name charms or ID tags. The website Etsy has many retailers that feature such personalized tags. ">
Sentimental retirement gifts. Scrapbooks, photo albums and collections of notes from customers, clients or colleagues are often the most meaningful retirement gifts. While sentimental gifts take some effort to compile, they are likely to be cherished by the retiree. "Gift recipients of all kinds love sentimental gifts, ones that remind them of the gift giver and the relationship the gift giver has with the recipient," says Jeff Galak, an associate professor of marketing at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business in Pittsburgh. "Givers should focus on gifts that exemplify the relationship they had and will hopefully continue to have with the person who is retiring. Research shows that this will not only be well liked by the recipient, but could also strengthen the relationship between gift giver and gift recipient." ">

“The deafening sound of a siren hammered the eardrums of the people in the street. An ambulance crossed town at high speed. Two accident victims with broken limbs, multiple contusions, and various other injuries were being transported to the emergency room. A young nurse with an exuberant body and shapely curves was providing very sensual emergency care which made them forget all suffering. Meanwhile, the driver suffered from a slight strabismus though it did not prevent him from swerving dangerously through the hundreds of cars who, at that hour, clogged the roads of the town. He just missed two light poles, grazed 14 cars, hit two motorcyclists and rammed a truck, but his orders were to arrive as fast as possible. The first to be taken to the emergency room was the paramedic who had been sitting next to the driver; he had arrived unconscious with symptoms of cardiac arrest.”
If you’re someone that has been interested in buying your favorite nurse a stethoscope, but don’t know which one they’d like this stethoscope makes for a very thoughtful gift that any nurse is sure to appreciate whether they’re a graduate nursing student, just starting out in their career or are simply in need of a new stethoscope, but haven’t had a chance to get one.

Most underscrub tees are meant solely to give you an added layer of protection under your scrubs, but not this one. The Core One Underscrub Tee is as versatile as it is soft and comfortable, making this the perfect gift for the nurse who needs to seamlessly transition from the hospital, to the grocery store, and even to the gym. The buttery-soft performance fabric is lightweight and wicks away moisture, and the reinforced seams ensure that this gift will work as hard as nurses do.

The best retirement gift will depend on the recipient's interests and personality as well as your relationship. You might look for a keepsake or ornament, or a book that offers personal, legal or financial guidance on navigating the next stage of their life. Another approach is to buy them something they can use for a hobby or interest they'll now have more time for, such as golf. Movies also make great retirement gifts.
There’s something for him, for her and suited to any style or sense of humour. Find the perfect nurse gift that will leave a smile on your loved ones faces for the entire year to come! Go even bolder and shape it your way. Add a personal photo or share a memory in text that will ensure a one-of-a-kind present that could only have come from you. Ensure your nurse friends aren't forgotten with a unique photo or holiday card they won’t be expecting.
Commemorative retirement gifts. A classic retirement gift is a watch, necklace, plaque or other object that is inscribed with the years of service to the company or in the industry. You might also consider listing noteworthy work achievements. "Gifts that are symbolic of their dedicated work and show the impact the retiree has made to the organization are appreciated," Eyring says. "A historical photo book from Shutterfly that captures their work history through photos with co-workers, articles and events. Perhaps a painting or historical print of their company."

National Nurses Week is May 6th-12th, 2018. In 1974, a presidential proclamation was issued to formally recognize a National Nurses Week. In 1993, May 6 to May 12 was established as the permanent date, ending on Florence Nightingale's birthday. Each year the celebration has grown in this country as we rely on these incredible individuals behind quality healthcare: our nurses, nursing assistants and our caring healthcare team and staff! Each day they are on the front lines, caring for our friends, family, and loved ones. Each day they make a difference in the lives of others.
If you're looking to go the classic and traditional route it doesn't get much better than the gold pocket watch. This is a classic gift because it is supposed to symbolize the time the person has spent working. The passage of time is not only literal but figurative. If you don't want to go with the pocket watch, a standard watch or clock can also carry the same significance.
It’s an honor to be a preceptor. I love taking a new nurse, or a student nurse, under my wing and teaching them the ropes of nursing. And while I find great joy in teaching, I also find it incredibly stressful. Not that the new nurse isn’t smart, they are. It’s just a stressful job, and it’s very fast-paced, which means that it’s easy to fall behind and it’s easy to miss something. I have a routine, one I know that works well for me and my patients and keeps me in check throughout the day. If I have to hand over some of the responsibility to a newbie, or slow my pace down to explain something, it’s much easier to overlook something important, or fall behind and have to stay at work charting until 9pm. Not to mention, it’s my license that is on the line. ">

Social retirement gifts. For some people, retirement can be isolating and lonely. Consider including a social invitation with your gift, such as an offer to get coffee, see a movie or attend a sporting event. "Rather than buy them a material gift, give them the gift of time – specifically, your time," says Michael Norton, a professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and co-author of "Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending." "Retirement involves completely changing your daily routine, which included conversations with co-workers all day, every day. Commit yourself to spending regular time with someone who is retiring, and you'll help them adjust to their new life."
When I was in my first year of practice as an oncology clinical nurse specialist (more than 30 years ago), my patient Lin offered me a personal gift. Sure, I had been the recipient of many gifts— flowers, chocolate candies, homemade food—but all had been shared with the entire staff. This situation was different: She was presenting me with a small, hand-embroidered hankie. No note, no verbal thank-you—just a smile and a bow. I had first met Lin about 10 months before, when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She had worked long, hard hours as a housekeeper; had a devoted husband and 2 beautiful boys, both in elementary school; and barely spoke English. I was the nurse who helped her understand her diagnosis, her access device, and her complex 2-year chemotherapy protocol, with all its adverse effects. She had just finished her initial phase of intense treatment and was transitioning to maintenance therapy. ">

It’s gift-giving season again—although for oncology nurses, managing material expressions of gratitude happens all year long, not just during the holidays. This can be a complex issue for all healthcare providers but especially oncology nurses, who develop a special, unique bond with patients and their families, who often want to show tangible appreciation for their care. ">
For many years the newly retired nurse will have dedicated her life to caring for others. It’s about time she enjoyed a spot of pampering herself. Give her a gift voucher that can be exchanged for a massage, manicure, pedicure, or hair style. She could use it for a reflexology session, day at her local spa, Reiki session, or a makeover. If there are a few people that are willing to pool finances, you might be able to treat her to a weekend away.
